Ghost Tour of Springfield Missouri
A city as old as Springfield, Missouri is bound to have it's own ghost stories and legends. There are many "haunted" locations in Springfield and the surrounding areas that you can visit. Create your own ghost tour and take time to visit each one.
The Bass Country Inn, located at 2610 Glenstone in Springfield, is home to a ghost named Carl. Carl is a former bus boy at the Inn and he's been sighted many times. The staff at the Inn report seeing him in the kitchen and halls, and sometimes just his legs appear under the table. Carl is reported to be harmless, but there is a female spirit at the Inn who doesn't like visitors.
The University Plaza Hotel also has a permanent resident, although the staff there doesn't like to advertise it. The ghost, referred to as "The Colonel," appears between midnight and 4 am in the ballroom and back hallways. He is an older man dressed entirely in black. Some theorize that he is the ghost of John S. Phelps, who was a decorated Civil War veteran. The hotel is located at South John W. Hammons Parkway.
The Springfield National Cemetery, not surprisingly, is a hot spot for Missouri ghostly activity. Visitors have taken many photos showing strange apparitions and ghostly "orbs." Others report seeing glowing gravestones. The cemetery is located at 1702 East Seminole Street in downtown Springfield.
Drury University at 900 North Benton Ave in Springfield has all of the makings for a haunted location. Old colleges are known to be centers for spirit activity, but this college also has the special distinction of being on both Indian burial grounds and a Civil War battlefield. Smith Hall, the women's dorm, is home to a little girl dressed in pink. She died in a fire during the Victorian era and wanders the halls looking for her teddy bear. Clara Thompson Hall has a piano that plays by itself, and doors that open and close on their own. Wilhoit Theatre often displays flickering lights when no one is in the building.
Southwest Missouri State University has a female ghost who haunts the Freudenberger House. She most often occupies the fifth floor, and students lovingly call her the Dorm Mom. The Fruedenberger house is located at 1000 E. Madison Street, Springfield.
