Poor anger management skills can have a huge effect on job productivity for several reasons. Not only do poor anger management skills directly relate to having poor interpersonal skills, it also can be a detriment at the office.
There are also circumstances when people become so tied up in their anger that they are unable to focus on anything beyond the rage and thus find themselves unable to focus on the work at hand.
Interpersonal skills are at the heart of most office relationships; and without good interpersonal skills, people often times find themselves without colleagues that are willing to work with them. Depending upon the job, these relationships between colleagues are vital to being successful in your career.
Most people have supervisors. If your interpersonal skills are clouded by anger management problems, then you will not be able to relate well with your supervisor. You will find yourself being overlooked for raises, promotions, and increased work responsibility. In the worst-case scenario, your supervisor will see your lack of interpersonal skills as being detrimental to the company and will let you go.
If you are the supervisor of a company, or are the owner of a company, then having poor anger management skills can be even more detrimental. For starters, it is unlikely that people will enjoy working for you so you may find yourself with a high employee turnover rate. Indeed, it may get so bad that you may have to pay much higher wages than your competitors just to retain skilled employees.
The business relationship you share with your suppliers will also suffer and you may find yourself having to constantly look for new suppliers as others refuse to work with you. So much of what we do today requires good interpersonal skills; and without them, your career will stagnate or at worst, cease to exist.
Having an anger problem has a lot to do with not being able to focus on anything but your anger or the people who are causing you to become angry. Therefore, there is a direct relationship between being angry and not being able to complete tasks effectively. Having an anger problem is like having blinders on to the rest of the world around you. Only by removing these blinders can you effectively work on other tasks that must be completed.
If you have a history of anger management problems people will be unlikely to hire you for future positions. In some cases, this effect cannot be reversed and you will need to move to a different location and gain a fresh start in your career field, if you wish to move ahead. This is why it is always important to treat your anger problem as soon as possible to avoid long-lasting implications.
