Using the Internet for Your Real Estate Business

Real estate is a very exciting and fast paced industry that has made many millionaires and broken many hearts. If you want to succeed in real estate you need to not only have a plan, but you need to update that plan frequently. The real estate market can change quickly and you need to be prepared for that change. You need to try to stand out from the crowd as much as possible. As the old saying goes, if you fail to have a plan then you plan to fail.

You can try making cold calls to get leads but more than likely you will find that at the end of the day you’ll have no leads and a whole lot of people annoyed with you. Once you sit down and actually write out a plan of what it is you want to do, the biggest part of your plan needs to embrace the power of the internet. An estimated 80% of home buyers do research online before they look into purchasing a home. If you don’t have a web presence then you are more or less shooting yourself in the foot.

At the bare minimum you need to establish a presence on many of the social networking sites. Social networking sites give you the ability to network with buyers, sellers, and other real estate professionals across the country and even across the world. Believe it or not, most social networking sites are free to join and do not require a website. The most famous of all the social networking sites is Myspace which has an estimated 100 million+ members worldwide.

If the internet isn’t exactly your thing and you’re not very familiar with Myspace then consider asking some young people how to open a Myspace account and how to use their services effectively. I can promise you that about 95% of people under the age of 30 know how to use Myspace or know someone who does. Myspace is great because they have hundreds of different social and professional groups that you can join. Once you have a nice, professional looking Myspace page you can start networking and getting leads within minutes.

Once you have a Myspace page created you should really take advantage of the free blog you are provided with. A blog, for those of you who don’t know, is an online journal that provides readers with regular updates. Posting entries in your blog on a regular basis builds your credibility by educating readers. The more credible you are the more leads you will likely receive.

Although simply building a presence on social networking sites can provide you with numerous leads and professional acquaintances, you really need to spend the money on building a website. And not just any website, your website needs to look professional. Your website is kind of like your online sales person. If your website is professional and convincing you will probably have more business than you know what to do with. Because a website can be such an important asset, you should consider hiring professional web designers and content writers.
